Karen Scarbrough

This school year will be Mrs. Scarbrough’s twelfth year teaching first grade, but seventeenth year teaching overall! It is such a privilege to be able to teach at First Academy! She says not only does she love the people she works with, but her family is also part of the FAmily! Coach Scarbrough is her husband; he coaches boys’ basketball and track, as well as teaches P.E and personal fitness. Delaney is their daughter, and a sophomore here. Their son, Trent, just graduated from FA and is attending Mount Vernon University in Ohio.

Karen graduated from Mount Union College in Ohio; earned her Master’s Degree in Supervision and Curriculum at Malone College, and is ESOL certified.

Mrs. Scarbrough loves teaching first grade, as it is one of the most important years of learning. She is amazed each year at how the students progress from the beginning of the year to the end!! It is her goal that all of her students will be excited to come to school each day! She accomplishes this by helping them to feel good about their learning and behavior through much praise and positive reinforcement. It is also important to her that the children enjoy the learning process; therefore she works to make the daily activities fun and meaningful.

Through her many years of teaching, Mrs. Scarbrough says she has created games for math and developed fun strategies to help students learn and remember the many sounds of the English language. She looks forward to teaching children these fun games and strategies and is eager to see what they teach her!
